Youngsters
are keeping the tradition alive!
Recently a group of young musicians from the East Coast of Puerto Rico
began playing at local activities produced by their school. The School
of Fine Arts in Humacao provided these youngsters with the stage and
forum, allowing them to have maximum exposure on a small scale. The
youngsters were anxious and driven to expose their fresh classic salsa
sound to the general public. Their type of salsa can best be described
as a classic salsa sound with a young feel.
La Orquesta Remembranzas was born and they began their preparations for
their first large scale presentation at the Pana Festival of Humacao.
Their repertoire consisted of songs by salsa greats such as Frankie
Ruiz, El Gran Combo, Héctor Lavoe, Tommy Olivencia and others. Those who
attended the Pana Festival were impressed by these young salseros and
feedback was very positive. The next step was to present the young band
to a more sophisticated audience and the logical choice was the
Nuyorican Cafe in Old San Juan. This venue presented musical greats like
Polito Huertas, Eddie Palmieri, Giovani Hidalgo and others. The young
Orquesta Remembranzas performed various songs during their presentation
and received very positive reviews from dancers, musicians and Juanra
Rivera, the owner of the Nuyorican. Future dates at this prestigious
establishment were agreed upon.
La Orquesta Remembranzas proceeded to move into the recording studio to
prepare their first 2 original songs. PARA CAMBIAR DE SABOR was the name
given to the CD. The title cut QUE EMPIECE LA RUMBA became the second
song selected for release. After several months of hard work and a
strong desire to present a different and young classic salsa sound the
CD was completed. WALO Radio in Humacao became the launching point for
the release and reviews were positive. La Orquesta Remembranzas
continued to perform at private functions in Puerto Rico, in places such
as at the Tardes de Salsa con Aroma a Cafe in Caguas. While performing
there, singer Maelo Ruiz joined them for a song and Manolito (timbalero
of La Sonora Ponceña) also jammed with the kids.
