Four years ago Yolanda Robles decided to
come to California from the lure of the beautiful
climate, its people, and to get closer to her two
sisters, her aunt and her uncle. The New York Puerto
Rican resigned from her position as an NYPD police
officer, packed her belongings, and brought her children
along to pursue her new dreams and visions.
In California she realized one of her major goals, which
was to start her own business. However, getting
customers to a new business when not being connected to
many people in a new place presented a challenge.
Yolanda soon discovered that salsa events provided her
with ample opportunity to get her business growing.
Yolanda
belongs to what is rather common among many New York
Puerto Ricans: She does not know how to dance salsa, and
neither does she have a desire to learn! However, the
salsa music and the delightful sight of gracious dancers
keep her lively personality at the clave at any event!
Her all-time favorite band is El Gran Combo.
Her lack of dancing skills has enabled her to meet new
friends and clients, by striking up conversations at
salsa events, while simply mingling and enjoying the
music and the sights. Puerto Rican style salsa events
have specifically been good to her, as it has meant a
steady stream of new friends and new clients, especially
from Puerto Ricans and other Latinos from all over
Southern California.
Yolanda’s business, however, is very unique. Drawing a
majority of female customers she has established herself
in a spiritual service business that has become very
popular, mostly among Hispanic females.
Her business, called La Reina del Rio, is located in
Orange, California, where she conducts psychic readings,
and sells things such as gifts, books, candles, incense,
religious relics, gems and crystals, herbal remedies.
According to Yolanda, telephone consultations are on her
menu of things to come in the future.
Normally very skeptical to such things as a “psychic
reading”, one of salsarican’s staff witnessed Yolanda’s
amazingly accurate psychic abilities. Whether for fun or
for serious reasons, the most impressive thing was that
the salsa craze not only connects people in music and
dance, but in lifelong friendships and business as well!
